JR Vezain - 3rd Consecutive Round WinPro Rodeo Canada
For Immediate Release
Nov 9, 2012

An unstoppable kid, a legendary veteran and an arena record highlighted round three action at the Canadian Finals Rodeo at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

So you’re twenty years old. You’re at your first Canadian Finals Rodeo and you’re up against eleven of the best bareback riders on the planet.

Rookie nerves, right?

Wrong.

J. R. Vezain of Cowley, Wyoming has won the first three rounds as his 84.25 score on the Calgary Stampede mare Princess Warrior topped the Friday night bareback riding action and took his three day money total to $34,194 ($11,398 per round). Most important, the young American has made up virtually all of the ground he had to and now sits just $1200 back of four time Canadian titleist and season leader Dusty LaValley. With a comfortable lead in the average as well (251.75 on three head), Vezain now sits in the driver’s seat and is showing no sign of letting up as the championship week moves into the second half.

Tanner Byrne, the long, tall redhead from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan rode the high leaping Big Stone bull Pop Evil to 87.5 to edge great veteran and former champion, Scott Schiffner, by one half point. Earlier in the evening the popular Schiffner was honoured as the 2012 CPRA Cowboy of the Year.

Stephenville, Texas cowgirl Carlee Rae Pierce (born in Red Deer, AB) set a new arena record in the Barrel Race with a blistering 14.214 on a five year-old gelding called Hammer. He’s one of two five year-olds the season leader brought to Edmonton as she rests her number one mount, Dillion.

“I was planning to run Tyson, the horse I’d run in the first two rounds but he slipped on the ice earlier today so I had to go to Hammer.” The forced substitution turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the record-setting run proved. Pierce also extended her lead over two time world champion, Lindsay Sears, to $15,000.

After three rounds, the Steer Wrestling leaderboard sees ten guys who still have a shot at being the 2012 champion. Night number three saw Pouce Coupe, B.C. dogger Clayton Moore make a move as his lightning fast 3.6 second run took the round and moved Moore to third place overall behind Tanner Milan and Zane Hankel. One of the ten contenders, Matt Reeves, suffered a potentially Finals ending knee injury en route to a second place 3.9 second run.

A spectacular round of Team Roping saw season leaders, Paul Eaves of Millsap, Texas and partner Dustin Bird of Cutbank, Montana, light it up with a 3.8 run, just a tenth of a second off the arena record. The go round win was the second for the season leading American duo, sandwiched around a no time.

The “TV Pen” of saddle broncs featured six horses that have been ‘Horse of the Year’ and when the dust settled and the smoke cleared, Oklahoma bronc rider Tyler Corrington  moved into title contention with an 85.50 score on the Northcott bucking horse—Charley Horse. Ponoka’s Luke Butterfield continues to lead the Bronc Riding by a ten thousand dollar margin over Rylan Geiger.

In the Tie Down Roping, Magrath, Alberta hand, Logan Hofer, posted the fastest time of the week to date to win the round and move to fourth overall. Hofer is within $10,000 of leader Shane Hanchey with three rounds remaining. Hanchey had a no time Friday night to go out of the average where Hofer sits fifth, a stat that could become critical come championship Sunday.
