Tyrel Flewelling and Roland McFadden - 2015 Canadian Team Roping Champions

Greg Kesler - photo by Mike CopemanThe rodeo world is saddened at the sudden passing of one of its most dedicated and distinguished stock contractors.

Greg Kesler was a champion rodeo competitor, a skilled pick up man and followed his Hall of Fame father, Reg, into the stock contracting business where he continued and built on a tradition of producing great bucking stock. Kesler-produced rodeos are known for their professionalism and crowd appeal. And Kesler horses and bulls have been honoured many times over with rodeo’s top awards. One example of the many accolades collected by the Kesler stock over the years was the remarkable run from the year 2000 to 2008 when Kesler horses won nine consecutive Canadian Saddle Bronc awards. Greg was the second of four generations of the Kesler family that have been a mainstay of the sport - both in Canada and the United States.

The Canadian Rodeo family is deeply affected by this news and extends deepest condolences to Judy, Duane, Berva-Dawn, Margo, Kurtis, Chase and the rest of the Kesler family.

* The Memorial Service for Greg Kesler will take place on Monday, February 8, 2016 at Exhibition Park, Lethbridge, AB - 1 p.m. Service in West Pavilion; Reception in the Main Pavilion

CANADIAN STARS SHINE
... February 4 update
Manitoba bareback rider Orin Larsen continues to have the hot hand at the U.S. winter rodeos.
Last night he collected a second place cheque of $3016 at the Wrangler Champions Challenge in Rapid City, South Dakota. And Larsen sits second in the average at Fort Worth's Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show with 246.5 points on 3 head. The 2015 Wrangler NFR qualifier is splitting 2/3 in the second round and sits third in the third round thus far. Nanton's Clay Elliott duplicated Larsen's feat at Rapid City where is 85 point saddle bronc ride netted him $3016 as well. Reigning Canadian Steer Wrestling Champion Tanner Milan was the third Canadian to strike pay dirt at Rapid City with a fifth place $928 payday.
* In the regular Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo (Rapid City), Luke Creasy continues to hold down second spot in the bareback riding with an 80 score.

Not to be outdone by the cowboys, a Canadian bucking horse grabbed its share of the spotlight at the Champions Challenge. C5 Rodeo's Virgil carried Caleb Bennett to the win with an 86.5 score and a $3944 payoff.

A glance at the World Standings sees Drayton Valley's Kyle Bowers in fourth spot with $8367 won; former Canadian Steer Wrestling Champion Clayton Moore in fourteen place with $3587 while three Canadian saddle bronc riders are in the top 15 -- Jake Watson of Hudsons Hope, BC (5th with $7054); Clay Elliott (7th with $5926) and Tyrel Larsen of Ingis, MB (12th with $3712). And in bull riding, New Zealand-born Adam Jamison (who makes his home in Okotoks) is in 12th spot with $7430.

Hitting the Ground Running in 2016
... catching up with Samantha Stokes - Miss Rodeo Canada

My first event in 2016 was the Denver Market and Stock Show in January! Hitting the Ground running is right! My flight arrived in Denver at 6:30 pm and I was scheduled for Grand Entry at 7:30! We made it through baggage claims; got ourselves a rental car and we were off! This busy schedule didn’t stop there, bright and early the next morning we attempted to navigate our way through the Denver WESA Market.

The Rodeo was an amazing facility with a huge crowd! I loved their energy and I was so honoured to be there on Canada night. They actually named Miss Rodeo Canada as a honorary guest; I rode in on the stage coach and waved while they read my bio to the crowd. On the other evenings I carried sponsor flags, helped organize children for mutton busting, and mingled.
