Second Generation Roper Collects First Pro Win |

Pro Rodeo Canada
For immediate release
Stavely, Alberta (May 14, 2012)
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
17 year old Kyle Lucas, son of 4 time Canadian Champion and Hall of Famer, ‘Smokin’ Joe Lucas, dialed up his first professional rodeo win this weekend at Stavely, Alberta as his 8.3 second run topped the tie-down roping field for $1881. But there was a veteran presence that factored into the younger Lucas’ success. “I rode my Dad’s old rope horse, Peewee. We figured out he’d been to Stavely 11 times already, and probably knew the score better than me.” the Carstairs rookie laughed.
The young roper also benefited from having spent every winter of his life in Arizona. “I find that the young guys who stay up here don’t get to practice that much because of the winter where I rope twice a day down there, and it really helps.”Lucas and his partner, Clint Weston, also picked up a fourth place cheque in the Team Roping. The weekend successes filled Lucas’ permit. “I’d like to get my semi-pro card next and then see what I can do about getting into the standings.”
With his high school rodeo commitments, it’ll be a busy year for the next generation of the Lucas ropers. And maybe a smokin’ one too!
It was deja vu for Kyle German in the bull riding at Stavely. For the second year in a row, German claimed top spot… this year sharing the honour with veteran Scott Schiffner. Both men posted 86’s, the exact same score that German had one year ago to win it outright. German, on Big Stone’s Red Skin and Schiffner on Vold’s Power Slave cashed cheques for $1594.
2009 barrel racing Rookie of the Year and CFR qualifier, Adel Hansen, made the final day a payday with her lightening fast 13.675 to edge Sydney Daines (13.683) for the title and $1979.
Among the other winners at Stavely was bareback rider Kevin Langevin (Bonnyville) who marked an 85 on Vold’s Sweeney Todd for $1456. Three time Canadian Champion, Kyle Bowers was second with 83.5 ($1195). In the saddle bronc riding, Ryan MacKenzie of Jordan Valley, Oregon rode Vold’s Easy To Love to 84 points and $1603. Canadians Layton Green and Delano Kjos split 2/3 with 81 points ($1174). The steer wrestling victor was Trace Nicholson (Taber) who ‘dogged’ his steer in 5.0 seconds for $2352. Cody Cassidy and Jessie Heggie split 2/3 with times of 5.1 seconds for $1878 each. Clint and Jeremy Buhler (Okotoks) were the best of the Team Ropers with a 5.0 for $2557. The steer riding winner was Lundbreck’s K’s Thomson with a 75 score ($407).
Canada’s oldest indoor pro rodeo enjoyed a format change this year as the performances ran Thursday through Saturday with excellent crowds on hand.
Next up on the Pro Rodeo Canada schedule are two British Columbia rodeos: Falkland Stampede and Luxton Pro Rodeo. Both events run from May 19-21.
