Canadians Pass $100,000 Mark at #WranglerNFR

Dustin VoldLAS VEGAS, NV-- December 12, 2014 -- With checks from Jake Vold and Dustin Flundra in Round 9 of the 2014 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Canadian contestants have crossed the $100,000 mark in earnings.

Vold kicked off the round as the second man out earning 84 points on Delta Glamorous from Picket Pro Rodeo, a horse he hadn’t seen before.

“This was kind of our souped-up hoppers tonight. He felt really good, a little bit stronger. He’s just a big, fat, bay horse that jumped and kicked across the pen,” Vold said.

The score held up until World Champ Kaycee Feild took first with an 85.5 leaving the Canadian Champ in second place for $15,018.

Now fifth in the aggregate, the Ponoka, Alberta athlete has earned $43,930 inside the Thomas & Mack moving his season total to $111,716, tenth in the world, with one round to go.

“I’m not thinking about it too much. I think I’ve dropped a couple places from where I was earlier in the week, so I’ve definitely still got one more chance. Hopefully, I can move up in it, that’s for sure. That’s what my goal is right now,” Vold said.
When asked about his plan for the final day of the season, and how he’s feeling, he replied:

“Same thing, have fun and try to win first. I’m looking forward to it. It would be nice to end it off on a high note,” Vold said. “Everyone’s pretty sore, and there’s a little more ice (used) every night. I’ve got enough in me for one more, for sure.”

Feild leads the aggregate, poised for another world title, five points ahead of Vold. Justin McDaniel rode 2013 Canadian Pro Rodeo Bareback Horse of the Year, True Grit from Wayne Vold for an 82.5 and fifth place in the round.

After taking his stirrups up a notch, Dustin Flundra started off the saddle bronc with a 79.5 on Total Equine’s Angel Fire from Lancaster & Pickett Pro Rodeo. His eighth score of the week pushed the four-time Canadian Champion to $24,213 in Vegas earnings, $6,436 of which came on Friday for a tie of fourth. Flundra sits sixth in the aggregate standings, a race led by Spencer Wright who’s in a fight for a world title most close to second-place Cort Scheer.

Vold’s $43,930, Flundra’s $24,213 and Curtis Cassidy’s $43,981 add up to $112,124 with one round and the aggregate to go.
Speaking of Cassidy, he got a time of eight seconds tonight finishing out of the money. He’s nearly mathematically out of the aggregate and is now out of the world title race but can win another round tomorrow to finish off and already great year on a high note. Luke Branquinho leads both the aggregate and world title race looking for his fifth gold buckle.

In the team roping, a miss from Trevor Brazile may have dusted the chances of a Grand Slam. He and Travis Graves moved down to fifth in the aggregate yet only trail Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill by less than $4,000 for the world titles. Tryan and Corkill have the advantage, also leading the aggregate.

Brazile picked up another round win in the tie down, tonight it was with a 7.6. He’s over $22,000 behind Tuf Cooper in the world standings in third place. Matt Shiozawa leads the aggregate and sits second in the world while Cooper and Brazile are hot on his heels within 2.7 seconds. 2013 Canadian Champion Timber Moore earned another check with a 7.9 in Round 9 worth $4,904 moving his Wrangler NFR money past $40,000.

Fallon Taylor and Lisa Lockhart are in the race of their life for their first world title. Who will it be? Currently, Taylor leads the world by $8,168 over Lockhart however Lockhart leads Taylor by 0.23 seconds in the aggregate. The difference between first and second in the aggregate is $9,195 meaning at this point, advantage Lockhart. It all comes down to Round 10 on Saturday Night in Las Vegas.

It’s the Sage Kimzey show in the bull riding, whether or not the judges were right, he won again moving his season total to nearly $270,000. He leads Trey Benton by over $100,000, has already won the aggregate worth another $48,732 and cinched the Ram Top Gun Award so he’ll be driving home a new truck tomorrow too.
