ALBERTA SPORTS HALL OF FAME HONOURS JACK DAINES
March 20 , 2009
One of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s (CPRA) own will be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame this spring. Jack Daines of Innisfail, Alta. will be among the recipients at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony May 29 for the impact he has made to the development of rodeo in Alberta.
“I didn’t believe it. I thought they had the wrong number,” Daines said about when he first heard he was nominated in the Builder category.
A successful entrepreneur and inexhaustible supporter of rodeo, Daines has been actively involved in the sport in one capacity or another since he hitchhiked to Olds one summer to compete in a boys’ steer riding competition. He won, and the plaque he received that day still resides with the many other awards that reflect his commitment to rodeo as a competitor, announcer and promoter. His dedication to the sport is also reflected in the charities he supports and, at 72, he shows no signs of slowing down.
Daines’ induction follows that of his son, Duane Daines, who was inducted in the Athlete category in 2003 for his dedicated and inspirational contributions to rodeo.
“It’s a great honour to see Duane in there,” Daines says proudly, and then starts chuckling. “Usually the father goes in and then the son follows, but this time the father followed the son.”
Canadian Rodeo News will have more on this story in May’s issue.
