CONTESTANTS ON THEIR MARK IN LETHBRIDGE

CALGARY, ALTA. – The Dodge Extreme Pro Rodeo marked the first Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) competition of 2009, and the second counting towards this season’s standings. An enthusiastic audience packed into the arena at Lethbridge Exhibition Park March 13 and 14 in Lethbridge, Alta., which also welcomed more than 200 contestants competing in seven events over the two-day rodeo.Wildwood, Alta.’s Rod Hay placed first in the saddle bronc competition with 85 points on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Coal Bank for $834.72. Jim Berry of Rocky Mountain House, Alta. got a second place “Kodak Moment” on a horse of the same name with an 80.5 point ride worth $626.04. Dustin Thompson of Brooks, Alta. and Jarrett Monroe of Saskatoon, Sask. also got in on the cheque-cutting action with third and fourth place for $417.36 and $208.68, respectively.

In bareback riding, Kevin Taylor rode miles ahead of the competition. The Swift Current, Sask. native scored a weekend high of 89.5 on Kesler Rodeo Co.’s Poker Star for $714.40. Second place went to Kyle Bowers of Brooks, Alta. He scored 76 points for $535.80 after a number of restart options. Stony Plain, Alta.’s Rob Thompson placed just behind Bowers with 74.5 for a third place finish and $357.20. Just half a point behind at 74 was Anthony Hodson from Turner Valley, Alta. He picked up $178.60.

Patrick Houle of Grande Prairie, Alta. stayed atop Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Black Out for the winning bull ride of 86.5 and $849.76. In second place, Winston Kusler of Manyberries, Alta. earned 85 points for $637.32. Third place went to Winfield, Alta. native Jesse Torkelson. He scored 84 points on Kesler Rodeo Co.’s Trail Blazer for $424.88. A cheque worth $212.44 went to Chad Besplug of Claresholm, Alta. who placed fourth with 83.5. The top four bull riders of the weekend took home an extra $90 each in day money, while riders Jesse Flett, Tyler Thomson, Max Fortmuller, Steven Turner, Devon Mezei, Kyle French and Jody Turner each received $57.14 in day money.

Trevor Nelson won with a time of 8.5 seconds in the tie-down roping. He goes back to Coalhurst, Alta. with an extra $926.84 in the bank. Alwin Bouchard placed second with 8.9 seconds for $767.04. Right behind the Scandia, Alta. roper was Lee Rombough from Taber, Alta. at 9.0 seconds, worth $607.24.

It was B.J. Zieffle of Consort, Alta. who took first in steer wrestling with a 4.1 second tackle for $981.36. J.D. Hays finished second at 4.3 seconds. He earned $812.16, while third place contestant Tanner Milan completed the task in 4.4 seconds for $642.96. Fourth place went to Craig Weisgerber of Ponoka, Alta. His effort took 4.5 seconds and earned $473.76.

In ladies barrel racing, which played host to more than 50 entrants, Okotokian Adel Hansen left her competition in the dust with a speedy 13.94 seconds. She slowed down long enough to pick up a cheque for $865.73. Kalynn Maddox of Eckville, Alta. clocked in at 14.03 seconds for second place, worth $742.05.Joleen Seitz was hot on Maddox’s tail with a 14.09 second run. The Savona, B.C. cowgirl finished in third place with $618.38.

Jeff Robson of Airdrie, Alta. and Magrath, Alta.’s D.J. Woodward led the pack in team roping by a mere fraction of a second. The duo showed their skills in 5.3 seconds. While they split a cheque for $2368.80, third place tie-down roping winner Lee Rombough and his teammate Michael Trautman – who didn’t have to travel far from his home in Lethbridge to compete in Friday’s performance – will divvy up $1,776.60 for their second place finish of 5.4 seconds. Roping partners Jeff Quam and Brett Buss placed third with their 5.6 second run for $1,184.40. Matt Fawcett and Levi Simpson’s 5.8-second finish presented them with a cheque for $592.20 and fourth place.
