A Look Back at the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association in 2017
As we basked in the glow of three Canadians emerging as World Champions—saddle bronc rider, Zeke Thurston and team ropers Levi Simpson and Jeremy Buhler to conclude the 2016 rodeo season, some of us wondered if 2017 would be something of a letdown. It didn’t take long for that notion to be kicked to the curb... even considering the highs and lows of the past year. ... Scroll down to read more.
A Look Back at the CPRA in 2017

The season actually began before the calendar year had rolled around to 2017 with the return of the Agribition Rodeo to pro ranks—the perfect kickoff to the rodeo season.

The CPRA also welcomed Rocky Mountain House and Olds back to the professional rodeo fold after brief absences while Edmonton’s K-Days Rodeo and the Hard Grass Bronc Match both enjoyed successful debuts as part of the Rodeo Canada family of events. The latter event saw the highest marked ride of the season as eventual Canadian Champion Layton Green spurred out a spectacular 92 points on the Calgary Stampede’s Stampede Warrior.

And speaking of great horses, none was better in 2017 than C5 Rodeo’s Virgil. The amazing grey was voted Best in Canada, Best of the CFR, World Champion bareback horse and split the honour as Best of the WNFR.

The CPRA welcomed new members to both the staff and the Board of Directors including new Board President Terry Cooke and Rodeo Administrator, Randa Nugent.

And there were difficult goodbyes as well. None more so than the premature passing of bull rider Ty Pozzobon whose death at age 25 in January spawned new and important initiatives concerning concussions and longterm brain injuries. Among those who also made their last rides this year were Hall of Famers Bruce Flewelling (who was posthumously named Cowboy of the Year), Winston Bruce and Harry Vold.

Steer wrestler Straws Milan wrote his name in the Canadian Rodeo record books, not once but twice, as his 2.9 second run at the K-Days Rodeo equaled the all-time Canadian record and his 3.1 in the third round at the Canadian Finals Rodeo matched the CFR arena record.

2006 Canadian Champion bull rider, Tanner Girletz, called it a career and did so with flare as he won the Grass Roots Final, and was still in contention for a second Canadian title as he climbed aboard his last bull at Sunday’s final CFR performance.

And while there no world titles heading north this time around, nine Canadian cowboys made all of us proud with their tremendous performances at this year’s WNFR in Las Vegas. And CFR/WNFR pickup man, Gary Rempel was honoured as the PRCA Pickup Man of the Year.

2017 saw a stellar class of inductees into the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame including saddle bronc rider, Denny Hay; the late bull rider Glen Keeley; bareback rider Billy Laye; barrel racer Rayel Little; the late Bill Pimm, longtime President and Chairman of the North Peace Stampede and Vold’s bull B6 Little Six.

And there was one more poignant goodbye. Canadian Professional Rodeo said so long to its CFR home for forty-three of the forty-four years of the Canadian Finals Rodeo. It was learned prior to this year’s CFR that this would be the last within the venerable walls of the Coliseum at Edmonton’s Northlands Park. But an amazing Finals, with’s livestream broadcast taking the action to fans who weren’t able able to get the last CFR, provided a fitting finale to what has quite rightly been called “one hell of a ride.”
