Goin’ for Gold – the 2020 WNFR Wraps up in Arlington, Texas
2020 World Champions

Dec 12, 2020 - Texas put on a great show for the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. And the ten day event ended in dramatic fashion with several races decided on Saturday night.

In the Bareback Riding, four-time Champion Kaycee Field was awarded a re-ride and had to win the round to sneak past three-time champ, Tim O’Connell and win the world. He drew Three Hills Rodeo’s Junior Bonner for his re-ride and made the ride he had to for 91 points to win the round and the coveted gold buckle, his fifth. Rookie Jess Pope became only the third rookie in the history of the NFR to claim the average title. The reigning Canadian Champion, Orin Larsen got bucked off the Calgary Stampede's Agent Lynx and that was costly as it dropped the Manitoba cowboy from fifth to eighth in the average and from third to sixth in the world standings. Larsen still took home an impressive $71,135 from the ten day event - $54,789 for four round placings including a round seven win, $6346 for an eighth place average finish and $10,000 for qualifying.

Three men finished within $10,000 of each other in the Steer Wrestling but it was Jacob Edler winning the average and the world by less than $2000 over Stetson Jorgensen. But maybe just as important was the Center, Iowa cowboy’s announcement during his post-run interview. “Hey World, I’m gonna be a Dad.” Canada’s Curtis Cassidy took home $18,885 for a share of 4-5 in the second round plus $10,000 for his 2020 NFR qualification. Cassidy also profited from the success of his 2020 Horse of the Year. Dashin Haze (Tyson) was ridden by a number of steer wrestlers throughout the Finals.

It’s flat-out rare, maybe next to impossible, to win the world without winning a dime in the average. But Colby Lovell and former Canadian Champion Paul Eaves found a way to do that in the Team Roping. All they had to do was win the last three go rounds to overcome the early troubles the team had endured. Lovell’s margin of victory was less than $500 over second place header Luke Brown while Eaves was $3000 better than runner-up heeler, Paden Bray, who with his heading partner Erich Rogers won the average. While the two Canadian connections failed to hit the pay window in the final round, Kolton Schmidt and partner Hunter Koch picked up $15,654 each for their 3rd place ranking in round seven and $10,000 each for qualifying. Canadian and World Champion, Levi Simpson roped consistently well on the head end through the ten days; he and partner Shay Carroll netted $51,250 each in total NFR money.

The Saddle Bronc Riding was all about Ryder Wright. He won five rounds, split the final round with brother Stetson as they recorded 91 point rides, allowing Ryder to clinch the average and wrap up his second world title. Zeke Thurston, the 2019 Canadian and World Champion finished with an 87 on the Frontier Rodeo four time World Champion bucking horse Medicine Woman who was making her final appearance at the WNFR as she’ll be retired from competition. The 4/5 go-round finish carried the Big Valley, Alberta talent to 4th in the average and a ninth place world finish. Overall, Thurston earned $90,738 at the 2020 WNFR.

The Tie Down Roping was another unbelievably close battle that went down to the last calf. Shad Mayfield, who had a tremendous regular season, was able to hang on for the title despite a Finals that proved to be challenging. Mayfield held on for a $231 margin over Marty Yates and $3000 over the 2012 World Champion and four time Canadian titleist, Shane Hanchey. Hanchey secured his second average buckle as he moved all the way from 10th place to third in the world earning $143,692 - including $67,269 for the average win. Hanchey rode Hollywood Himself (TJ), Logan and Maynerd Bird's award-winning tie down horse, throughout the ten day Finals.

The Barrel Race is a three word story. Hailey. Kinsel. Sister. Just a huge WNFR for the pair with six go round wins, the average title, her third World crown and the RAM Top Gun Award that goes to the biggest money winner in a single event at the WNFR. It was a history making week for the duo as they also broke the all-time WPRA/PRCA record for the fastest time on a regulation pattern with a 16.56 second run in round eight.

And speaking of history... the first brother combination to win two events the same year is, who else, but the Wrights. Stetson Wright who had already clinched the All-Around, put on an amazing show in the Bull Riding to claim the title. In a final round that saw Sage Kimzey and Roscoe Jarboe split the round with 92 point rides, Stetson Wright was 89 points for a 4/5 split in round 10... which sealed the deal for the second generation superstar and ended Kimzey’s World Champion string at six. The rookie Colten Fritzlan claimed the average title.

Down to the Wire at 2020 WNFR

Cole Reiner & Calgary Stampede's Arbitrator JoeAs we head into Round 10 of the 2020 WNFR, with the exception of the All Around title, determination of this year’s World Champions will be decided at.

It came down to the top two Bareback riders in the world going head to head on a couple of Wayne Vold bareback horses. Kaycee Feild, with four titles to his credit came into round nine in second place and in pursuit of Tim O’Connell and his three champions buckles in top spot. Feild prevailed in the duel with his 87.5 points on True Grit while O’Connell was one hole out of the money with an 83 on Mucho Dinero. When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, the two are now tied in the average with one round remaining and only $16,000 separate the two with O’Connell clinging to that slender lead. Almost forgotten in the drama of the title race was the go round win that went to Cole Reiner who was 89.5 on another Canadian horse, this one Arbitrator Joe from the Calgary Stampede. That makes six rounds in total in the bareback riding and bronc riding that have been won on Calgary horses.

Orin Larsen continued to be productive as he picked up a sixth place cheque with 83.5 on Cactus Black from Stace Smith Pro Rodeo. The Canadian champ sits fifth in the average and third in the world.

Three men split the round in the Steer Wrestling, all with 3.5. Tyler Waguespack, Jacob Talley and world leader Matt Reeves shared the round win. Stetson Jorgensen, who is second in the world standings, posted a 3.6 and maintained his lead in the average and is just $11,000 back of Reeves who is not in the average.

There was another split in the Team Roping. Chad Masters and Wesley Thorpe along with Colby Lovell and former Canadian Champion Paul Eaves put together a pair of 3.8 seconds runs. Lovell and Eaves are leading the world standings but are well back in the average as they’ve struggled at this WNFR. The two Canadians in the field, Levi Schmidt and partner Shay Carroll with a no time, and Kolton Schmidt and partner Hunter Koch with a barrier penalty were out of the money on this night.

Wyatt Caspar came into the WNFR with the lead in the world Saddle Bronc standings and won the ninth round on another Calgary Stampede’s Xena Warrior with 88 points. Ryder Wright, was right behind him with an 87 point ride. Wright holds a slender $1300 lead over Caspar but leads the average with Caspar right behind him there as well. Zeke Thurston was out of the money with a 72.5 after having to get on a re-ride.

The Tie Down Roping looked like it might be over before the week even starting as Shad Mayfield came to Arlington with what looked like an insurmountable lead. But heading to round ten, it’s not over. Mayfield had struggled throughout he first nine rounds. Tuf Cooper won the round with a 6.9 second run and this event will now be decided on the last calf with a couple of guys who have a shot at Mayfield, among them Mart Yates and four time Canadian Champion, Shane Hanchey.

Barrel Racing - Hailey Kinsel has spent almost as much time on the victory lap horse as she has on her amazing palomino, Sister. Tonight the duo put together a 16.81 on the top of the ground although she did flirt with disaster as the second barrel wobbled but stayed standing. The win gives her six go-round buckles—the WNFR record is seven.

In the Bull Riding, Stetson Wright took a big step toward winning two buckles at this year’s WNFR with a spectacular 92 point ride on Beutler and Sons Smoke Stack and the stage is set for another event that will be decided in round ten. Ty Wallace and Wright are within dollars of one another but Wright leads the average with Wallace in second spot.

Check back tomorrow evening for the final results from the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Canada Night - Canadians Shine

WNFR 2020-Canada Night. Clay Guardipee photoWNFR Round 8 - Zeke Thurston has been picking up the pace in the later rounds of the Globe Life Field WNFR. He broke the ice in round 6 with a 3/4 split, was third last night and came back with another 3/4 split in round eight. The reigning Canadian Saddle Bronc Champ and two time World titleist has gathered up just over 37,000 points in the last three rounds and has also climbed to fifth place in the average. And the Wright Brothers continue to fly high. Ryder won his fourth round of the 2020 Finals; this time on Andrews Rodeo’s Positive Times. The 2017 World Champion is now first in the average and first in the world.

Six-time WNFR Bareback Riding qualifier, Orin Larsen has also picked up his game in the second half of this year's Finals. After being blanked in the first half of the Arlington, Texas event, in rounds six through eight, the Manitoba cowboy has been fourth, first and at tonight’s Canada Night, the reigning Canadian Champion picked up a split of third with 85 points on Beutler and Sons' Redigo. That gives Larsen (who now makes Nebraska his home) just over 50,000 points in three go-rounds and he’s climbed all the way to fifth place in the average.

Canada NightAnd after two rounds of the Bareback eliminator pen at the Wrangler NFR, chalk up two wins aboard the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding bareback horse, Xplosive Skies. This time it was NFR rookie Jess Pope who was 89 points on the mare that was named top bareback horse of the 2016 WNFR.

Although Canadian Steer Wrestling qualifier, Curtis Cassidy, was a long 14.1 in tonight’s eighth round, he still played a major role in Blake Knowles’ 3.6 round winning run. Knowles was riding Cassidy's Canadian and World Champion Steer Wrestling horse, Tyson, and thanked the many time Canadian Champion cowboy in the moments right after the win.

Colby Lovell and Paul Eaves were 4.3 to win a somewhat soft round of Team Roping. Four time Canadian and 2016 World Champion Levi Simpson and Colorado partner, Shay Carroll split 3/4 (the third such split of the night for the Canadian contingent) and like Larsen and Thurston cashed cheques for $13,327.

Canadian cowboysTwo time World Barrel Racing Champion, Hailey Kinsel, and her wonder horse Sister set a new WPRA world record on a standard pattern with an amazing 16.56. This broke the record the dynamic duo set at Dodge City earlier this year. It was Kinsel’s fifth go round win and she’s now putting some distance between herself and her nearest challenger, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi. Emily Miller-Beisel, who won rounds six and seven, finished up second in the round.

Tie Down Roper, Westyn Hughes, rebounded from a couple of tough nights with a round winning 7.4 second run while Shane Hanchey the reigning and four-time Canadian Champion was out of the money with an 8.8 but still leads the very lucrative average.

Ty Wallace is poised to end Sage Kimzey’s remarkable run of six world Bull Rding titles in a row. Wallace shared the round eight win with Roscoe Jarboe as both men posted 89.5 scores. Wallace was on Stockyards Pro Rodeo’s Soy El Fuego while Jarboe navigated Frontier Rodeo’s Magic Poison for his first place share. Wallace sits first overall and second in the average with two rounds to go.

The first-ever Breakaway Roping National Finals wrapped up today with Jackie Crawford, wife of NFR team roper, Charly Crawford, claiming the historic title. A Canadian connection in the event, Albertan Shelby Boisjoli, acquitted herself very well as she finished up eighth overall.

Orin Larsen is in the House - A Look at WNFR Round 7
Orin Larsen - Alaina Stangle photoDec 9 - As the Canadian contingent enjoyed their best night of this WNFR, the reigning Canadian Champion and 2019 runner-up for the world title put together a spectacular 90 point ride of the cool Calgary Stampede horse Yippee Kibitz to totally dominate the Round 7 Bareback Riding. In a field of tough horses that saw seven scores in the seventies, Larsen made the kind of ride that Canadian and American fans are used to seeing from the long-legged Manitoba product. And it was the first go-round win by a Canadian at this Finals.

“I knew he was the one to have,” Larsen grinned after the ride. “I won Pendleton on him in 2018. To have him by my name was pretty special, Canadian guy on a Canadian horse, just nod your head and ride like a cowboy.”

Team Roping—The frustration ended tonight for the 2013 Canadian Champion, Kolton Schmidt and his Texas partner (and defending Canadian Champion heeler) Hunter Koch. The team that hadn’t recorded a time through the first six rounds collected third place cheques of $15,654 each with their 4.4 second run. Charly Crawford who announced his impending retirement and rookie partner Logan Medlin won the round with a rapid 3.8.

The Canadian success continued in the Saddle Bronc Riding as two time and reigning World Champion and 2019 Canadian title holder turned in an outstanding 88 point performance on Dakota Rodeo’s Bartender to collect a third place cheque of his own. The round belonged to Stetson Wright as he rode HiLo Pro Rodeo’s Larry Culpepper (raised by Sask-based Francis Rodeo) to a sensational 90.5 as he vies for a second All-Around title.

Steer Wrestling
—A nice birthday present for Clayton Hass as the bulldogger won his first round of the WNFR with a 3.4 run. Canada’s Curtis Cassidy broke the barrier to be 14.2 in the round.

Tie Down roper Hunter Herrin is one of the great comeback stories of the sport. Having overcome a couple of major hip surgeries and finishing up 246th in the world standings a year ago, the veteran turned in a 6.8 second run for back to back round wins and now sits second in the world.

In the Barrel Racing event, Emily Miller-Beisel made it two round wins in a row with the fastest time of the rodeo, a spectacular 16.85. Even more remarkable is the fact that she and her horse Chongo were near the bottom of the ground after being on the top of the ground for the win twenty-four hours earlier. After giving her great horse Sister a night off, two time champion Hailey Kinsel and the amazing mare were second in the round with a 16.90.

It was the eliminator pen in the Bull Riding. But that didn’t keep Stetson Wright from winning his second event of the night. The Utah talent was 89 on Universal Pro Rodeo’s Slinger. Jeff Askey was second and six time World Champion Sage Kimzey was third on a night that saw just three rides. And there was a Canadian moment in the bull riding as well as Outlaw Buckers' Fish Camp made short work of Boudreau Campbell.

Canadian Roughstock Cowboys Make First Trip to Pay Window in Round 6
Zeke Thurston - 2020 NFRTwo time World and reigning Canadian Saddle Bronc Champion Zeke Thurston got off the schneid in round six with an 85.5 on All Country from Three Hills Rodeo. The Big Valley, Alberta cowboy earned his first cheque--$11,141 as he split 3-5 with Rusty and Stetson Wright while the third Wright brother, Ryder was electric on HiLo ProRodeo’s Billie for 90.5 points.

Orin Larsen is hoping the second half of this year’s Wrangler NFR goes a whole lot better than the first half. And if round six in any indication, that could well be the case. The reigning Canadian Bareback Riding Champion turned in a Larsen-like 86 point ride on Cervi Brothers' Ain’t No Angel for the $11,000 fourth place payday. Tanner Aus split 2/3 in the round, just a half point better than Larsen on the Calgary Stampede’s Zulu Warrior, coincidentally the horse that carried the Canadian to his title in Red Deer a year ago. Cole Reiner won the round with an 87 on Flying U’s Lil Red Hawk.

The word in the Steer Wrestling was “Yikes”. Two blistering 3.3 second runs to dominate the leaderboard were turned in by Stetson Jorgensen and Jacob Edler. It took a 3.8 just to place in the round which meant that Canada’s Curtis Cassidy, who was pretty darn good with a 4.0, finished out of the money.

Team Roping – Cody Snow and Junior Nogueira won the round with a rapid 3.0. It was not a good night for the Canucks. Canadian and World Champion, Levi Schmidt, and partner Shay Carroll roped a leg and posted an 11 flat to be well back in the round while two time WNFR qualifier, Kolton Schmidt, and partner Hunter Koch continue to be mired in a slump as they took another no time.

The reigning World Tie-Down Roping Champion was back in the spotlight. Haven Meged was a lightning fast 6.8 for the round win. Shad Mayfield who has a difficult Finals to date continues to hold on to a comfortable lead.

In the Ladies Barrel Racing, Emily Miller-Beisel was on top of the ground and she made the most of the opportunity with a 17.01 on her outstanding horse, Chongo, for her first go round win. Neither of the leaders, Hailey Kinsel and Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi placed in the round but remain 1-2 in the world and 1-2 in the average.

Dustin Bouquet worked his way through the re-ride pen in tonight’s Bull Riding event. After getting on three head his comment “Third time’s a charm” was just that as he rode Pickett Rodeo’s Lonesome You for 89.5 points and the win.

2020 WNFR Round Five Highlights
Shane Hanchey - Canadian ChampionIt was a bounce back story in the Tie-Down Roping as Hunter Herrin made up for a fourth round no time with a round winning 7.4 second run. 2013 World Champion and four time Canadian titleist, Shane Hanchey from Sulfur, Louisiana, riding the Canadian superstar horse, TJ (owned by Logan Bird), was just a tenth of a second back and sits third in the average that starts to be a factor at the midway point of the Finals.

World Team Roping Champions Clay Smith and Jade Corkill smoked a 3.5 for the go round win while the Canadian, Levi Simpson who has a world title of his own, and his partner Shay Carroll placed for the third round in a row, this time with a 4.7, good for a fifth place cheque ($6769). The pair hold down fourth in the average.

In the Saddle Bronc Riding, Wyatt Casper was another rebound moment as he came back from a buckoff in round four to make a spectacular 90.5 point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring. There was a pair of 89’s as well shared by Brody Cress as he rode the tremendous Calgary Stampede stallion, Special Delivery and Allen Boore on Sutton Rodeo’s South Point split 2/3. Canadian and World Champion Zeke Thurston checked in with an 85.5 on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket to be out of the money.

Bareback Riding - Reigning World Champion Clayton Biglow was a huge 89 on Pickett Rodeo’s Top Flight. Canadian Champion, Orin Larsen, was 82 points but out of the money. And 2018 Canadian Champion, Richmond Champion, leads the average in the Bareback Riding after Round 5. Legendary C5 horse, Virgil, was more than Mason Clements could handle on this night. The amazing gray was selected rank horse of the night but Clements could manage only 73 points on the former Canadian and World Horse of the Year.

Steer Wrestling co-winners Jace Melvin and season leader Matt Reeves each posted 3.9 second runs to share tonight's round win. Canadian Curtis Cassidy could manage only a 15.0 on a tough steer to handle.

Barrel Racing - The Hailey Kinsel Show continued tonight as the back to back champion won her third round of this year’s WNFR. Hailey and her wonder horse, Sister, posted the fastest time of the rodeo to date, a 16.92. She sits first in the average and first in the world standings.

In the Bull Riding, Ty Wallace made it back to back go-round wins as he was a spectacular 91.5 points on Freddy Fender from the Rafter G Rodeo Company. Stetson Wright was right behind him with a 90 point effort on a Canadian bull, Outlaw Buckers' Brahma Boots Chrome.

Canadian Stock Enjoy Big Night at Wrangler NFR Round Three

Round win for Kaycee Feild on Calgary's Xplosive SkiesDec 5 - It was the rank pen in both the Bareback Riding and the Saddle Bronc Riding in tonight’s third round of the WNFR. And the Canadian horses were front and centre.

It started in the Bareback Riding when three time World Champion, Kaycee Feild teamed up with the Calgary Stampede’s Xplosive Skies for 91.5 and the round win.

“That was a fun horse”, Feild noted. “He starts really hard and there’s a lot of up and down. Stuff was happening really, really, really fast but I thought I rode good and I’m just enjoying doing what I do.”

And in this tough pen Canadian horses were among the toughest—Calgary’s Soap Bubbles, Northcott-Macza’s Spilled Perfume and C5’s Makeup Face bucked off Winn Ratliff, Jamie Howlett and Jake Brown respectively. Reigning Canadian Champion, Orin Larsen was 78.5 to finish out of the money.

Then in the Saddle Bronc Riding, Calgary Stampede horses were once again in the spotlight. Yesterday’s Delivery carried Allen Boore to the round win with a sensational 90.5. Then Zaka Kibitz helped Isaac Diaz to a third place 85.5. And Northcott-Macza's Get Smart was as advertised. The celebrated holder of multiple championships in Canada and the World dispatched reigning All Round Champion, Stetson Wright in short order. Canadian and World Champion, Zeke Thurston, took a no score as he missed his horse out.

Additional Highlights:
Steer Wrestling–Will Lummus won the round with a 3.5. Canadian Curtis Cassidy posted a 3.9 to split sixth in the round.
Team Roping –Travis Graves and Dustin Egusquiza won their second round in a row to build on their respective leads in the world standings. World and Canadian Champion Levi Simpson and his partner Shay Carroll earned third in the round with a 4.4 for $15,654. Kolton Schmidt and Hunter Koch continued to struggle through the third round.
Tie Down Roping–Cory Solomon, who was 16th in the world standings and drew into the Finals when Caleb Smidt was forced to the sidelines with a positive COVID test, won the round with a rapid 7.0. 2013 World Champion and four time Canadian Champion, Shane Hanchey, picked up a fourth place cheque with a 7.4.
Barrel Racing–Four time Canadian Champion, Lisa Lockhart won the round with a blazing 17.09 on her outstanding mare, Rosa.
Bull Riding–Rookie Colton Fritzlan picked up his first go round win on a night when the bulls bucked off thirteen of fifteen would-be riders. Fritzlan was 89 on Bar T Rodeo’s Angel’s Landing.

Stetson WrightDec 4, 2020 - Wrangler NFR Round Two Highlights

After two rounds of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, it’s been all about the Wright family so far. Following up on their opening round successes where Rusty Wright won the bronc riding and reigning All Around Champion Stetson Wright topped the field of bull riders, they were at it again in Round 2.

In the saddle bronc, the third of the three Utah brothers, Ryder, was 90 points on Korkow Rodeo’s Feather Fluffer for the win and 26,231 points ($15,738). And later, Stetson came back for a second straight bull riding go-round win (88.5 points) on Powder River Rodeo’s Axel.

“I’ve seen a lot of good guys get bucked off that bull but I knew I could win the round on him,” Wright stated. “My Dad told me I might have to write my own story tonight because nobody seems to have the answer on that bull. I’m just glad it worked out.”

Curtis CassidyIn the steer wrestling event, two time World Champion Tyler Waguespack and NFR rookie, Bridger Anderson, split the round with identical 3.8 second runs. Veteran Canadian, Curtis Cassidy, bounced back from an opening night no time to post a 4.3 for a 4/5 split.

Defending Canadian Bareback Champion, Orin Larsen, managed a 75.5 while Tanner Aus earned the round win with a spectacular 87 on (Canadian-raised horse) Hi Lo Pro Rodeo's Wilson Sanchez. Two time World Champion (and reigning Canadian Champ) Zeke Thurston marked 82.5 in the bronc riding event for eighth place, out of the money.

In the team roping, the two Canadian headers at this year’s NFR, 2016 World Champion Levi Simpson (partner, Shay Carroll) and second time NFR qualifier Kolton Schmidt (partner, Hunter Koch) both took no times. Dustin Egusquiza and Travis Graves won the round with a blistering 3.8.

In the tie-down roping event, Marty Yates made it two in a row with a 7.2 second run as he tries to close ground on season leader Shad Mayfield, who took a no time this round.

2018 Barrel Racing Rookie of the Year, Jimmie Smith, overcame an opening night disappointing run as she and Lena clocked a 17.04. Hailey Kinsel remains in the lead for the World with a second place finish tonight.
