Edmonton, AB (Nov 7, 2014) – When a veteran and a rookie pair up, magic can happen. Even when they live thousands of miles apart. Four time Canadian Champion Heeler, Rocky Dallyn from Nanton, Alberta joined forces with 20 year old 2013 Canadian Champion Header, Kolton Schmidt (who is from Barhead, AB but is attending college in Oklahoma) to compete in the CFR41 Team Roping event. A fifth place finish in the first performance, a share of first last night added to the round win tonight put the duo in second spot overall midway through the week… and first in the average.
“This was a big move for us,” Dallyn said. “We needed to have a win.”
Schmidt, who flew up from the U.S. earlier this week, added, “We need to keep bearing down, be aggressive and take one run at a time.”
While both men have been roping consistently, the only recent opportunity to practice together came Tuesday morning just before the start to CFR. But tonight’s draw helped on the confidence end of things. Dallyn and Schmidt drew the steer that fellow ropers (Roland McFadden and Tyrel Flewelling) roped to share the first round win on.
Season leading Bareback Rider, Jake Vold, was familiar with the four legged superstar he drew in tonight’s round. The Ponoka cowboy rode 2014 Bareback Horse of the Year, Mucho Dinero to 90.25 points to win the short round at the Strathmore Stampede earlier this season. And tonight he picked up the $11,809 first place cheque and the round win with an 88.75 result.
“I had a feeling I’d draw him,” Vold grinned. “And it worked out. The delivery was different here but I knew what to expect. He’s a big, hard horse that can take a good spur ride.” Ironically enough, Mucho Dinero is owned by Wayne Vold, Jake’s third cousin.
In addition to leading the bareback riders into the CFR this year, Vold qualified for his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “I’ve had a good year,” the 27 year old commented. “I have some new traveling partners, I went to rodeos I wanted to go to and got on horses I wanted to get on. It’s been fun.”
In the steer wrestling event, Trygve Pugh, who placed in the first two rounds, added his first 2014 win tonight with a 3.4 second run.
“I drew the same steer tonight I won Brooks on this fall” (the Dallas Sunstrum Memorial Rodeo) the Ponoka bull dogger explained. “And it turned out to be the 33rd steer I’ve run at the CFR which is kind of cool as my back number this year is ‘33’.” Pugh’s first place cheque ($11,809.44) moved him into third place overall.
Despite struggling with injury much of this season (the most recent challenge two broken bones in his leg in late August), 2013 Canadian Champion Bull Rider, Chad Besplug combined with the 2014 Bull of the Year in Canada, Outlaw Buckers’ Up Tight to split the round win with Ponoka’s Tyler Pankewitz. Both men marked 87 points for $10,294.41 each.
Besplug acknowleged that drawing a ‘Bull of the Year’ is why he rides bulls. “The chance to get bucked off is higher… but so is the chance to win.”
Besplug also assumes the lead in the aggregate with 257.25 points on three rides, and has moved into second place overall – just $4600 back of Season Leader, Dakota Buttar who bucked off on Friday night.
In the saddle bronc riding, Cort Scheer posted his second win in three nights. The Elsmere, Nebraska cowboy rode Calgary Stampede’s Lynx Mountain to 88.75 points and the first place cheque.
The tie-down roping event is still wide open… Curtis Cassidy of Donalda, Alberta roped in 7.9 seconds to win the round. The leader going in, Clint Robinson, missed his calf while Season Leader, Matt Shiozawa and third place man, Randall Carlisle both failed to place.
In the ladies barrel racing event, Medicine Hat’s Steffanie Mather continued her climb up the leader board. The second time CFR qualifier earned tonight’s win with a 14.610 second run - moving her to second overall and first in the average.
CFR41 fans enjoyed the crowning of Miss Rodeo Canada. Katy Lucas of Carstairs, Alberta (daughter of tie-down roping legend, Joe Lucas) earned the 2015 crown from among four finalists.
