The regular season is rapidly coming to an end for us cowboys and cowgirls!
It’s a Sunday evening and I’m relaxing at home for a change, rather than driving down the road returning from a busy rodeo weekend. This weekend held only one CPRA rodeo down in Lethbridge, and since I chose not to compete south of the border, I had a chance to spend time with family and friends close to home.
With the rodeo schedule slowing down I had the opportunity this past week to compete in two charity events. The first event was the “Three Barrels, Two Hearts, OneMatch” celebrity barrel race where I did, in fact, make my debut in the barrel racing. The event was held to raise awareness for OneMatch.ca and to raise funds for Brooke Patton, a young woman who was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. Brooke was matched with a stem cell donor through the One Match program and received her transplant in June. The turnout at the event was great and I believe I tipped a barrel to win it! Although my team, Can Smashers R Us, did not win the team challenge, I’m happy to say that I did not get out-run by Tanner Girletz!
The second event I had the privilege of going to was the Curtis Glencross Invitational Roughstock in support of The Ronald MacDonald House and minor hockey in Alberta. I had better luck bareback riding than barrel racing, and split the win with Clayton Bunny and Dustan McPhee. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of both causes and I am glad that so many people came out to help support some great people and charities.
The upcoming weekend is a big one for many rodeo athletes. With Armstrong being the Wrangler Tour Finale this is the last big weekend in the CPRA where guys can really make that final push towards the CFR. I’m glad to be in a position where I’m not worried about qualifying for the finals but hungry to gain more ground on the guys above me. I hope all of you are starting to think about the Canadian Finals Rodeo as I sure have it on my mind already.
Till next time.
