CFR41 Champions Declared

EDMONTON, AB – November 9, 2014 - “I knew I had to win the round.” The words were spoken by Tanner Milan as he described the moments before making a 3.5 run that clinched the second title for the likable Cochrane steer wrestler.

“My brother (hazer Baillee) slapped me on the back and told me to go for it. And that’s what I did.”

The run carried Milan to a $2600.00 margin of victory over sophomore bull dogger, Justin Miller of Neepawa, Manitoba who had to content himself with the aggregate title and a CFR pay cheque of just over $43,500.

Tanner MilanThe win was Milan’s second as he claimed the championship back in 2012. And like he did the first time around, Milan pulled a red shirt out of his closet for his final run. “I knew I was wearing a red shirt the first time I won so I figured I’d better wear one again today.”

While the money differential was close in the steer wrestling, it was nowhere near as tight as in the saddle bronc riding where Hastings, Minnesota bronc rider Tyler Corrington edged fellow American Cort Scheer by just $230. The difference was Corrington’s 86 point go-round winning ride aboard C5 Rodeo’s Lights Out while his traveling buddy, Sheer managed only a fourth place finish in the round with 79.75.

“I didn’t actually know I had won until they (CFR officials) told me to go to the tunnel for the Champions presentations.” The final round win capped off a week that saw Corrington add two seconds, a third, a three-four split as well as second in the average en route to the victory.

Steffanie Mather of Medicine Hat, Alberta became the first Canadian to win the barrel racing championship since 2010. She and her gelding, Buck, powered their way to a first, two seconds and three thirds, along with the aggregate title, to give the second time finalist a $20,000 margin over season leader Britany Diaz of Mandan, North Dakota.

Ponoka, Alberta’s Jake Vold was the only champion to secure his title before the final performance began. The four time CFR qualifier, who is headed to his first WNFR in December, had a slow start to the week, but picked up two firsts to add to his $40,002 in regular season earnings for a total of $63,621 and the gold buckle.

Chubbuck, Idaho tie-down roper, Matt Shiozawa has made four trips north to the CFR. This year, his perseverance paid off as he enjoyed a stellar year coming into the finals as the overall season leader with $25,394 in earnings. Two firsts, a share of second and second in the average netted the talented roper $65,062 as he held off challenges from Curtis Cassidy, Clint Robinson and Morgan Grant.

Jake VoldThe team roping finale proved to be extremely close as well as Ponoka’s Levi Simpson won for the second time, this year with Pueblo, Colorado heeling partner, Ryon Tittel. The pair withstood the challenge of last year’s heading champion Kolton Schmidt and four time title holder Rocky Dallyn to secure the championship

In the bull riding, Kindersley, Saskatchewan’s Dakota Buttar, who celebrated his 22nd birthday during Thursday’s second round of the CFR, continued his season-long domination with a $47,000 finals performance. Two firsts, two thirds and the average win carried Buttar to a decisive $21,000 cushion over second place finisher and 2008 Champion, Tyler Thomson.

Other CFR winners were Ky Marshall in the all around race, Curtis Cassidy, with his eighth high point title and young cowboys, Lane Cust in the novice saddle bronc riding, Dantan Bertsch in the novice bareback riding and Coy Robbins in the steer riding.

Top stock awards for the finals went to the Calgary Stampede in the bareback riding for Unfortunate Carma, Outlaw Buckers’ celebrated saddle bronc, Lunatic Party and Vold Rodeo Company’s bull, Proper Ripped.
