Q&A with - Rana Walter, Lethbridge, AB
November 14 - Voted 2009 Cowgirl of the Year by her fellow barrel racers, Walter won the fourth go-round and set a second-fastest arena record with a 14.62-second run.

CRN: What can you tell us about that winning ride?
Walter: Well, Adel had a great run at 14.69 and I thought, “Wow that's going to be today's best run,” and when my horse turned a good first barrel, I just rode as good as I could. My dad told me to ride smart and be ready for anything. (Doc) turned a good first, second, the third I had to grab a bit of an outside line, but he worked great and he ran hard.
CRN: Did you have any idea how fast you and Doc were as you were heading home?
Walter: I didn't know. Everyone has such tough horses here, so you never really know.
CRN: Your time is now the second fastest CFR time, which hasn't been beat since the '70s. How does that feel?
Walter: Good. I'm excited. It'll be neat to be under Gayle Howes name.
CRN: What does today's, combined with your other placings this week, mean for you as you head into tomorrow?
Walter: I think it gives me more of an opportunity to shoot for a dream.
CRN: Being your fourth CFR, have you learned anything over the years that's helped you out?
Walter: I think the first time, when I was younger, I was just in awe. And the horse I had then, I wasn't able to run it, so now having my horse to run and stuff, it makes it easier. And just knowing what to expect. |
